The White House recently shared an AI-generated image of Donald Trump dressed as the pope, following a joke he made earlier this week. While attending the funeral of Pope Francis in Rome, Trump told reporters, “I’d like to be pope,” sparking a bit of humor.

The image, which was initially posted by Trump on Truth Social and later shared by the White House on X, shows him wearing full papal attire, a large crucifix around his neck, and sitting in the papal coronation chair, pointing dramatically.

The incident comes as the Catholic Church mourns the death of Pope Francis and searches for a new leader. Cardinals are set to meet on May 7 to begin the process of electing a new pope.

Trump, who attended the funeral, made it clear that he had no particular preference for Francis’ successor, but jokingly suggested that he himself would be his “first choice.” He also mentioned a cardinal from New York, praising him highly.

The AI image, however, has drawn mixed reactions. While some saw it as humorous, others criticized it as disrespectful, especially in light of the recent death of the pope.

One X user, who called the image “disrespectful and offensive,” stressed that “God is not being mocked” and questioned whether it was a wise move.
